Don Pearl - Biography
Don Pearl (aka Drum Dog)
Drums and Percussion
Don’s love for music started at an early age listening to his dad spin vinyl records. He picked up his first set of drum sticks at age 12, inspired by Ringo Starr and the primal physicality of the instrument. After realizing the drums were his instrument of passion he proceeded to teach himself from a variety of sources. He started performing in rock and pop bands during high school and his early college years.
However, Don had another passion for taking care of animals, which lead him to a 25 year break from playing the drums and gigging to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Then in 1996 Don picked up a drum magazine and knew at that moment he had to play the drums again. The next day Don found himself in a drum specialty shop and purchased a Yamaha maple custom kit. Don practiced for six months then joined a local progressive rock band. In 1999 he joined Triple Barrel, a classic rock and blues band, which performed original and cover music throughout South Florida.
Don holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, a Masters of Science in Animal Nutrition and Toxicology, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. He was born in Miami and moved to the Nashville area in 2005.
Equipment
Current drums are a 7 piece D’Amico thin shelled maple custom studio kit in midnight red. Don’s Bad Doggin’ drum kit is a 7 piece Fibes custom (Jaspar shells) maple kit in silver sparkle. An array of metal and wood snare drums provide the back beat bark for Bad Dog. Cymbals are mainly Paiste, but Sabian and Zilgian complement the mix. Don also uses a variety of traps such as wind chimes, wood block, cowbell, etc.
Motorcycle
Drum Dog has been riding motorcycles for over 30 years. He has owned and ridden a Harley Davidson Sportster, Harley Davison 2000 Deuce, Norton 750 Commander, Triumph 650, and Suzuki RM and PE 250 dirt bikes. Don currently rides a 2005 Harley Davidson Road Glide in Bad Dog Black.
