Frank Fish - Biography
Frank Fish (aka Bass Dog)
Bass guitar and vocals
Frank began playing bass in 1970 when he jumped from baritone sax to the 4-stringer in his first garage band. He never looked back, playing in a variety of bands through high school and college through the 70's and beyond. James Jamerson, Paul McCartney and Pete Cetera among his most important early influences on bass and later jazz-fusion greats such as Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, and Jimmy Haslip.
Also accomplished on bassoon he played in bands and orchestras through high school and college. Turning down scholarship offers on bassoon, he attended Wabash College, majoring in chemistry where he ran track and cross country while remaining active on both bass and bassoon.
While preparing to tour for a year on bass for “Up With People,” he instead (somewhat accidentally) found himself getting accepted to and attending medical school. Setting his instruments aside for a few years, he eventually came to Nashville to join the faculty at Vanderbilt Medical School in 1990. After playing bassoon at Belmont University for a few years, he found himself drawn back to bass.
Inspired by the outstanding musicians in Nashville, he studied jazz bass with Roy Vogt at Belmont University for several years where he gravitated to 6 string basses (fretted and fretless). He has since remained active in multiple styles from jazz standards, jazz-fusion to rock, switching as needed between upright, fretless and fretted basses. Currently, in addition to holding down the low end with the "Dogs" he also plays regularly with the “Nashville Jazz Collective" performing jazz standards and jazz-fusion.
Equipment
Owning a nice collection of 4, 5 and 6 string basses, for rocking out, Frank prefers 5 String jazz basses (Fender & Sadowsky) or a Tobias Classic 5-string bass , usually without additional effects.
